Q:I love this blog, but your response to the adoption comment was incredibly hurtful and offensive being adopted myself. My parents may be white, but they're not the richest people in the world and they struggled to afford to adopt my brother and me. And I am grateful every day that they did and for the life I had. I'm sure there are plenty of other people out there like me.
I’m sorry that it was hurtful. There is lots of resources out there that talk about trans-racial adoption and the tendency of these adoptions to revolve around the White Savior Complex as well as with trans-racial adoption often times the children are isolated from their original cultures. I know a lot of families that try to keep their child connected to their culture and I also know many who don’t because of this notion of “colorblindness.” And if your parents struggled to adopt you…then it was not about your parents to which I was speaking. Rich white people have the hardest time relating to people of color. So when their child is a person of color…that can become problematic. Here’s one blog about it I can think of right off the bat:
